At a time when democratic values across Europe are increasingly challenged and historical narratives often contested, a new European cooperation project sets out to rethink how Europe remembers its past. EDUCULT – Institute of Cultural Policy and Cultural Management (Austria), together with Visual Voices (Cyprus), Rightchallenge – Associação (Portugal), IoDeposito (Italy), and the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture (Serbia), has launched ReIMAGINE – Reimagining European Remembrance: Art as a Tool for an Inclusive Remembrance Culture, a cooperation partnership co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

ReIMAGINE responds to the growing need for a more pluralistic and diversity-sensitive culture of remembrance in Europe. With increasingly superdiverse societies, traditional, nation-based narratives of 20th-century history often fail to reflect the lived experiences of diaspora, minorities, and minoritized communities. The project aims to foster a democratic and inclusive understanding of Europe’s past by highlighting interconnected histories and amplifying diverse perspectives through the arts.

Art as a Tool for Inclusive Remembrance: Over the course of 26 months, ReIMAGINE brings together research, arts education, and civic education to explore how artistic practices can challenge dominant narratives of memory and create spaces for reflection, dialogue and participation. Art is approached as a powerful medium for storytelling and critical engagement, capable of making complex historical experiences accessible across generations and backgrounds.

A European Partnership with Shared Values: The partnership combines complementary expertise from arts-based peacebuilding, adult education, cultural mediation, and minority representation. Together, the partners aim to strengthen civic engagement, promote democratic participation, and contribute to a more inclusive European culture of remembrance that reflects the continent’s shared yet diverse histories.

Project activities will take place in Austria, Cyprus, Italy, Portugal and Serbia between October 2025 and November 2027, combining local engagement with transnational exchange.

• Foster an inclusive and democratic understanding of 20th-century history, its interconnectedness, and its impact on European identity. By embracing diverse narratives, the project strengthens civic education and promotes historical awareness as a foundation for democracy.
• Highlight art as a tool for storytelling, reflection, and dialogue in remembrance culture, encouraging active citizenship and democratic participation via creative expression.

• Representation of Diverse Narratives of Remembrance: Foster a more inclusive, diversity-sensitive, and accurate portrayal of Europe's shared history by promoting multiple perspectives and underrepresented experiences.
• Remembrance through Artistic Expression: Position art as a driving force for questioning and challenging official and dominant narratives of memory, while integrating arts education into innovative and co-creative approaches to cultural remembrance. By doing so, the project will challenge dominant mono-national narratives, reflect the diversity of experiences and identities across Europe, and promote art as an inclusive means of fostering lifelong and meaningful learning.
• Fostering Compassion and Tolerance among Europeans: Alongside highlighting diverse narratives and promoting artistic expression, the project will place compassion, empathy, and tolerance at the centre of learning. In the context of current democratic challenges, the rise of far-right movements, and increasing hate crimes, it aims to strengthen democratic values, mutual understanding, and social cohesion across European societies.

Key project activities include:

• A participatory needs assessment on inclusive remembrance culture in arts and education, collecting qualitative insights from educators, artists, and community members across all partner countries.
• A Digital Platform for Collective Memory, showcasing artistic practices, stories, and videos that engage with remembrance culture from diverse perspectives.
• A Training Toolkit on Inclusive Remembrance, designed for educators, cultural professionals, and artists, offering practical methodologies to integrate art-based remembrance into civic and adult education.
• A transnational Learning, Teaching and Training Activity (LTTA) for adult educators, followed by national pilot trainings in each partner country.
• National multiplier events and a European Conference in Vienna, in 2027, ensuring broad dissemination and long-term impact.

• Transnational Needs Assessment Report – A comprehensive transnational analysis of the current state of remembrance through the arts across Austria, Portugal, Cyprus, Italy, and Serbia, identifying common themes, best practices, challenges, and emerging needs.
• Needs Assessment Findings Slide Deck – A visual presentation summarising the key findings and recommendations of the transnational needs assessment.
• Digital Platform – An online platform bringing together project resources, good practices, methodologies, and learning materials, ensuring their accessibility and long-term sustainability.
• Stories of Good Practices – A collection of 25 examples showcasing how contemporary artistic practices can foster critical thinking, empathy, and a more inclusive understanding of history by challenging dominant narratives of remembrance.
• Video Series on Stories of Good Practices – A series of 10 videos presenting effective artistic approaches and methodologies, making them more accessible and tangible. These videos will serve as practical guides and sources of inspiration for professionals seeking to integrate artistic practices into remembrance, history, and civic education.
• Training Toolkit – A comprehensive toolkit providing concrete methodologies for integrating art-based approaches into remembrance education, civic education, and civic engagement. It will include theoretical content, practical activities, and self-directed learning materials, serving as an essential resource for strengthening historical awareness, democratic values, critical thinking, and active citizenship across diverse educational and cultural settings.
