Igniting Youth Active Participation in Political and Electoral Processes through Political Literacy and Knowledge

Background

Get Political is based on the idea that political literacy should be treated as a basic skill, just like reading, writing or using digital tools. By creating safe spaces where young people can ask questions, clarify doubts and discuss politics with their peers, the project aims to turn embarrassment into curiosity and confidence, equipping them with the language and knowledge they need to better understand what is happening around them.

At the same time, the project aims to bring young people closer to institutions, making politics less abstract: visits to parliaments, local authorities and European institutions, practical activities such as political scavenger hunts and interviews with decision-makers enable them to see “who does what” and how decisions are made. In this way, Get Political aims to transform vague interest into informed and sustained participation, helping young people realise that they have a place and a voice in democratic processes.

Objectives

To improve the political literacy and awareness of young people aged 15 to 30, in local, national and European contexts, through simple, clear and engaging educational resources.

To improve youth participation in electoral and democratic processes, helping to foster voting habits and formal engagement from an early age.

Strengthen the skills of youth workers and educators to promote political participation in non-formal education.

Create opportunities for direct contact between young people and institutions/politicians, fostering dialogue, trust and mutual understanding.

Contribute to the objectives of the EU Youth Strategy 2019–2027 – Engage, Connect, Empower, with a specific focus on formal political participation and political literacy.

Expected Results

Young people with a better understanding of political and electoral systems are more confident about asking questions, discussing politics and taking part in elections.

Developing habits of participation (voting, keeping informed, getting involved in local initiatives), thereby bridging the gap between young people and institutions.

Young people are better able to distinguish reliable information from disinformation, with improvements in media literacy and critical thinking.

Youth organisations and educators with new methods and tools to promote political participation in their regular activities.

Greater recognition, on the part of decision-makers and political bodies, of the importance of youth participation and their proposals.

Activities

Political Talks: conversations and reflections among young people about what they know, feel and think regarding politics, elections, leaders and institutions; these form the basis for the other resources.

National Political Institutions Peddy Papers: Peddy Papers in parliaments, chambers, councils and other institutions, where groups of young people explore the space and respond to challenges relating to how these bodies operate.

Exchange of Political Institutions: Peddy Papers: international exchanges in which young people visit institutions in other partner countries, meet young party members and undertake socio-political tours of the cities.

European Peddy Paper in Brussels: a joint visit to EU institutions and the creation of a “European Peddy Paper”, including a legislative theatre workshop to devise new measures and laws.

Interviews “Why Politics Matters?: young people interview local councillors, MPs and other political figures about their careers and the importance of getting involved.

Get Political closing events in each country, where young graduates lead sessions with their peers, test resources and share results with youth organisations and decision-makers.
