The XCAPE project has created a comprehensive set of fully online challenges to attract those on the margins of education and training and help them acquire skills in a range of areas through a challenge-based learning approach.
The project aims to help young people from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds; young people for whom formal education has failed and who are now on the margins of society and the economy; young people with disabilities; and young people living in remote areas where access to tailored educational programmes for key skills development is limited.
The key message of the XCAPE project is that learning is not a spectator sport and that the more you can engage the learner in the learning process, the greater the potential for sustainable outcomes.
Challenge-based learning represents an innovative way to bring technology and critical thinking into the learning environment, and the benefits are twofold: games have a history of promoting engagement in a learning environment, even among those for whom formal education has failed; the collaborative elements help learners develop social and teamwork skills.
